The Learjet 25B: A Classic Business Jet

The Learjet 25B holds a special place in aviation history as a high-speed, luxurious business jet that defined an era. Produced in 1970, it was a significant upgrade from its predecessor, the Learjet 24, boasting increased passenger capacity and enhanced performance. This post delves into the design, features, and legacy of this iconic aircraft.

Design and Performance

The Learjet 25B's design was centered around speed and efficiency. Key features include:

Engines: Two General Electric CJ610-6 turbojet engines, each delivering 2,950 pounds of thrust at sea level. These engines were known for their reliability and power, enabling the aircraft to reach impressive speeds.

Capacity: While the Learjet 24 could seat eight passengers (including crew), the Learjet 25B increased capacity to 10. A 1.27-meter (4 ft 2 in) fuselage extension made this expansion possible.

Hydraulic Systems: The aircraft employed hydraulic systems to operate the landing gear, brakes, flaps, and spoilers. Advanced features included a pressure regulator and accumulator to manage pressure surges and a backup auxiliary hydraulic pump for in-flight emergencies.

Landing Gear: A tricycle configuration with dual wheels on the main gear and disc brakes with an anti-skid system enhanced both safety and control.

Brakes: The brake system provided power boost via hydraulic pressure, incorporating a pneumatic backup for emergency stops. An anti-skid system provided maximum braking efficiency without wheel lockup.

Fuel System: The Learjet 25B featured five fuel tanks: two wing tanks, a fuselage tank, and two wingtip tanks. This strategic design and the jet pumps in the tanks optimized range and flight duration.

Flight Controls: Dual control wheels and rudder pedals provide precise handling. The control system combines mechanical linkages with electrical controls for functions such as nose wheel steering and trim.

Operational Characteristics and Legacy

High-Altitude Performance: The Learjet 25B's capabilities allowed it to cruise at high altitudes, typically between Flight Level 390 and 430, which was helpful for overflying weather and air traffic congestion.

Versatility: The interior of the Learjet 25B could be customized to transport cargo and passengers and was even adaptable for medevac operations.

Challenging to Fly: Compared to other general aviation aircraft, the Learjet 25B required skilled handling and longer runways, especially in hot or high-altitude conditions.

The Learjet 25B notably impacted business aviation, proving a successful design, although today's stricter noise regulations have limited its use. Even now, the Learjet 25B continues to be a reminder of aviation's exciting achievements and innovation within the business jet field.

The Learjet Story: A Brief History

Learjet's story begins in the late 1950s with William Powell Lear, who initially based his designs on the American military Marvel aircraft before adapting the design from the Swiss FFA P-16 ground attack fighter. The company, initially Swiss American Aviation Corporation, moved its operations to Wichita, Kansas, in 1962 due to what Bill Lear Jr. described as the slow pace of work in Switzerland.
The first Learjet, the Model 23, a 6-8 seater, took its maiden flight in October 1963. Several successful models followed, including the Learjet 24 and 25, quickly gaining popularity for their speed and luxury. By 1974, the Learjet fleet surpassed one million flight hours. Significant milestones like the introduction of the Learjet 28 (with winglets) and the Learjet 55 demonstrated continuous innovation in design and performance.
In 1967, Gates Rubber Company acquired a majority stake in Learjet. The company, renamed Gates Learjet Corporation, continued to grow, expanding its production and achieving another milestone with its 500th aircraft in 1975. However, the company faced challenges in the 1980s, which included temporarily halting jet production.
In 1990, Bombardier Aerospace purchased Learjet Corporation, marking a new chapter for the brand as "Bombardier Learjet Family." This era introduced new models like the Learjet 60 and 45. Despite the launch of the innovative all-composite Learjet 85 in 2007, the program was eventually canceled in 2015.
After a long and impactful run, Bombardier announced the end of Learjet production in February 2021, concluding a remarkable journey of over 60 years. The final Learjet 75 was delivered in March 2022. The Learjet brand is now a powerful legacy, with over 3,000 aircraft produced. Bombardier continues to support the existing Learjet fleet.

Industry Leading 90-Day Money-Back Guarantee

You may return parts or request a replacement within 90 days of the purchase date.
No penalties, no re-stocking fees, and no nonsense. Start Here

We do not accept returns on anything marked CORE, on any Fuselage, or on anything stating "No Returns Accepted".

Our 90-day guarantee is our commitment to treating our customers honestly and fairly.
Every part is carefully inspected throughout our process and several times before it goes online. Most items are sold as-removed, just as they came off the aircraft. These parts are not functionally tested. What we do provide is clear photos, full traceability when available, pricing that reflects the as-removed condition, and a no-nonsense 90-day return window.

We do everything we can to get it right, and if something slips through, we stand behind it with a 90-day return policy that’s unmatched in the aircraft parts industry.

If it’s past 90 days, we may decline the return, or we may offer a return with a restocking fee.
We’ll always aim to be fair. Every return gets a human review, not a robot reply.

Once your part makes it back to us, refunds are typically processed within a week, often sooner.
Return shipping is the buyer's responsibility, unless the return is due to our mistake (like receiving the wrong part number).

If you need to return an item or request a replacement, start the process HERE.

Condition Codes for BAS Part Sales Inventory

As-Removed:
Part removed from aircraft in its original, unaltered state. Most of the inventory available from BAS Part Sales is in As-Removed condition. We removed it from the aircraft in working condition and expect it to pass inspection. As-Removed items come with our 90-day Money-Back Guarantee. Read More

Core:
A Core item is a damaged or non-functioning unit that either came to us that way or, during our normal evaluation process, was identified as unsuitable for sale as a standard working item. It is priced accordingly based on its value relative to a working unit. Some may be used for parts, repair attempts, training, display, decor, or other purposes that remain safely on the ground, but they are not expected to work or pass inspection and are unlikely to be suitable for installation on an airworthy aircraft. Core items are listed with "Core" in the title, are not returnable, and are not covered by our 90-Day Money-Back Guarantee.

Overhauled:
An as-removed item that has been sent to a shop for repair or rebuild. These items, of course, come with our 90-day money-back guarantee.

NOS - New Old Stock:
Item that is factory new but has been stored for a period of time that is usually past stock limit date. These items also come with our 90-day money-back guarantee.

Certifications & Documentation:
If an item is offered for sale with an 8130, STC, or other documentation, that detail is typically notated in the product title and the description. If it is not notated, then BAS cannot provide any certification for that item.
