The Little Jet That Could: A Quick History of the MU300
We also found this helpful article from Aircraft Recognition Guide that helps shed some light on the variations and iterations that came from the MU300 - https://www.aircraftrecognitionguide.com/beech-400-mitsubishi-mu-300
The MU-300 Diamond, developed in the late 1970s, was Mitsubishi's foray into the business jet market. It was a conventional design with swept wings and a T-tail, powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D turbofans. Initial development was rapid, but certification was delayed due to new safety regulations following a DC-10 crash.
In 1985, Mitsubishi sold the design rights and remaining kits of the Diamond II to Beechcraft. Beechcraft rebranded it as the Beechjet 400, and later versions (Beechjet 400A, 400XP) were successful, leading to significant military contracts, particularly the T-1A Jayhawk trainer for the U.S. Air Force (nearly 180 units). Japan's Air Self-Defense Force also acquired a small number (13).
