New In The Aircraft Salvage Hangar - November 20 2023
Posted by BAS | Aircraft Salvage Experts on Nov 17th 2023
This week in the disassembly hangar we have two big and complicated aircraft to work on. The first is a Bell UH-1H helicopter. The other is a Cessna 401A that we are going to carefully disassemble into the right pieces for a simulator.
Normally we bring 4 aircraft into the shop and surgically remove every usable part in about a week. This time around the team will be hyper-focused on these two large and complicated aircraft in order to get exactly what our customers need from them. It's going to be an interesting week in the aircraft salvage hangar for sure!
They Huey has been wildly popular and might sell as a whole unit before the team has a chance to start on it. If you are interested, get in touch ASAP.
Bell UH-1H Huey Helicopter
The Bell UH-1 is best known and most recognized as a prolific military helicopter. It was the first turbine-powered helicopter in service with the U.S. military. Development started in the 1950s, and the Bell UH-1 Iroquois was first used in combat during the Vietnam War in 1962. The original designation was HU-1, leading to the nickname "Huey," which stuck like glue even though the official designation evolved over the years. Many variations and derivatives have been developed from the UH-1. The Bell 204 and 205 are civilian versions of the UH-1. There was a twin-engine version, the UH-1N Twin Huey. And a four-blade variation, the UH-1Y Venom. The UH-1 was eventually phased out of use by the US Army, but hundreds remained in use over 50 years after its introduction.
The UH-1H is the most produced version of the Huey, designated a utility helicopter. You will find the UH-1H in use at some point in history by the US Army, US Navy, US Airforce, the DEA, The Argentine Army and Air Force, The Australian Air Force, El Salvadoran Air Force, and in military service in Germany, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, New Zealand, the Philippines, Rhodesia, Yemen, and more.
The Huey in our shop was in civilian use and came to a hard landing in a farmer's field. This aircraft was used as an AG choppa (I couldn't help myself) to spray crops and has a high-end spraying system onboard. This will be a very interesting disassembly process as we carefully tear down this enormous machine. Most of the interior, avionics, instrument panel, and spraying system are in good shape. The forward airframe is also in descent condition.
Be sure to check out the Wikipedia page on the HU-1 as it provides an interesting look at the history of this iconic helicopter.
Cessna 401A
The Cessna 401 is a non-pressurized 6 to 8 seat twin-engine aircraft. The 401 was first certified in 1968 and was produced until 1971. The 401 and 402 are very similar. The key distinction is how it was configured at the factory. The 401 was intended for corporate travel. The 402 was delivered either as a freight aircraft or with a nine-seat commuter set up for small airline operators. The 402 was manufactured until 1985.

This 401 is destined to become a simulator. We are ready to strategically de-rivet the fuselage, as designated by the customer, to give them the exact cockpit and fuselage section they need. The rest of the aircraft will soon become 401 parts available in our store. Be sure to stay updated on our blog as we will document how we disassemble this unit for the needs of our customer.
