Cessna 421B, Thorpe T-18 Tiger, and a Maule MT-7 are in the BAS Disassembly Hangar this week
This week, we have some aircraft in the disassembly hangar that we don't see very often - a Maule MT-7, Thorp T-18 Tiger, and big twin Cessna 421B! All three of these aircraft are quite unique to our inventory. Dave and The Mechanics are already hard at work surgically disassembling these aircraft so if you have a need, get in touch ASAP!

Cessna 421B Golden Eagle

The Cessna 421 Golden Eagle, a pressurized twin-engine light transport aircraft, first emerged in May 1967 (model year 1968). Its initial design incorporated "Stabila-Tip" wingtip fuel tanks and electro-mechanical landing gear, similar to the Cessna 310. The aircraft's success was immediate, with 200 units sold in its first year. Subsequent years saw refinements; the 1969 model (421A) featured a three-inch fuselage stretch, increased fuel capacity, and a higher gross weight. Further improvements in 1971 resulted in the 421B, boasting increased empty and gross weights, a two-foot wingspan extension, a higher service ceiling, and an extended nose for more baggage space. The 1975 model offered an optional package for known icing conditions, and the final iteration, the 421C (introduced in 1976), included wet wings, eliminated wingtip fuel tanks, and featured a redesigned landing gear. Production concluded in 1985 after 1,901 aircraft were delivered.


The Cessna 421B Golden Eagle variant holds a significant place in the aircraft's history, representing a substantial upgrade from its predecessors. This model, type-approved in April 1970, incorporated several key improvements that significantly enhanced its capabilities and performance. Notably, the 421B's empty and gross weight were increased, alongside a two-foot increase in wingspan, leading to a 5,000-foot gain in service ceiling. This increase in size and weight capacity also allowed for the accommodation of up to eight passengers. The 421B’s enhanced capabilities are reflected in its popularity – 699 units were produced, making it the most numerous variant of the 421 series.

Thorp T-18 Tiger

The Thorp T-18, a two-place, all-metal homebuilt aircraft, was designed in 1963 by John Thorp. Initially conceived as an open-cockpit design powered by a surplus Lycoming O-290G engine, it evolved into a fully enclosed, bubble-canopied aircraft capable of accommodating engines up to 200 hp. Its design, emphasizing ease of construction from aluminum sheets, contributed to its popularity. The T-18's performance was significantly enhanced through modifications incorporating larger, cowled Lycoming engines, boosting cruising speeds to over 200 mph in higher-powered versions.


The T-18's exceptional performance, achieved through simple modifications, quickly propelled it to prominence as one of the most popular homebuilt aircraft designs of the 1970s and early 1980s. Its success continued until the introduction of the Van's Aircraft RV kitplane series. The aircraft's affordability, partly due to its use of readily available surplus engines, made it accessible to many homebuilders. The T-18's legacy also includes notable achievements, such as Donald Taylor's 1976 circumnavigation of the globe and subsequent flight to the North Pole, both accomplished in a T-18.


Several variants emerged over time, including the T-18W with a wider fuselage, the T-18C with a convertible wing, the T-18CW combining both features and the S-18, which incorporated a modified airfoil and other refinements. The S-18T variant introduced tricycle landing gear. By 2011, over 1600 plans had been sold, and around 400 T-18s were flying. Eklund Engineering produced laser-cut kits, and Thorp Central currently maintains the legacy of the design by offering plans and parts.

Maule MT-7

The Maule M-7, a single-engine light aircraft, emerged in the mid-1980s as a development of the earlier M-4 model. Its design features a high-wing, strut-braced monoplane configuration, offering the option of either a tailwheel or tricycle undercarriage. The M-7 distinguishes itself from its predecessors, the M-5 and M-6, with a longer cabin capable of seating two in front and up to three on a bench seat behind. An optional third row of smaller "kiddie seats" could also be added. This versatility, combined with the option of using twin floats for floatplane operation, contributed to the aircraft's popularity.


Numerous variants of the M-7 were produced, categorized into M-7 and MX-7 series. These variations primarily involved different engine options (piston or turboprop) and undercarriage choices. Engines ranged from the Lycoming O-320 to the more powerful Lycoming O-540 and even Allison 250 turboprops, impacting performance characteristics and capabilities. The MX-7 series notably incorporated the M-6 fuselage with M-5 wings, providing a unique blend of features across the Maule line. These design choices aimed to cater to diverse pilot needs and operational scenarios.


The M-7's design included features such as increased fuel tankage, Hoerner-style wingtips, and five-position flaps, enhancing efficiency and performance. The aircraft's production continued for several years with approximately 500 units built by 1995, showcasing its enduring presence in general aviation.
