New In The Aircraft Salvage Hangar - September 23, 2024

Posted by Clinton McJenkin on Sep 25th 2024

Dave & The Mechanics are pulling in some unique airplanes this week. Most of these units were not wrecked. Rather, they were taken out of service, abandoned, or came to us from a fleet purchase. Most of the engines have been sold too. Nonetheless, we will still recover a long, long list of goodies from the Piper Cheyenne, the Swearingen SA226, and the Cessna 411 currently in the disassembly hangar.

Cessna 411

The Cessna 411 is a twin-engine light aircraft that was first introduced in the early 1960s. Known for its distinctive design, the Cessna 411 features a high-wing configuration and is powered by two Continental IO-520-U engines, each delivering a significant amount of horsepower. This aircraft is capable of seating up to six passengers comfortably, making it an appealing choice for both private owners and charter services. The spacious cabin and large windows provide a pleasant flying experience, with ample room for luggage, making it suitable for short to medium-range flights.

In addition to its comfort and capacity, the Cessna 411 is recognized for its reliability and ease of handling. With a maximum cruise speed of around 190 knots and a range of approximately 1,200 nautical miles, it offers versatility for various flight missions. Its advanced avionics and impressive climb rate add to its appeal, allowing pilots to operate effectively in various conditions. Although it is a vintage model, the Cessna 411 remains a popular choice among aviation enthusiasts and those looking for a robust and dependable aircraft for both business and leisure travel.

The engines for the aircraft have been sold. This aircraft was left unattended in a hangar in Texas. It was basically abandoned before we bought it. It has lots of goodies though.

Swearingen SA226-T(B)

Editors Note: As I researched this aircraft, I was genuinely confused by the variants. In one place, I see the SA226 series called the Metro II. Other resources call this aircraft the Merlin IIIB. It seems that the Merlin and Metro monikers were highly interchangable with this manufacturer. I am sure there is a source of truth out there for this little detail, but that has been hard to lock down. So, before the internet roast me for calling this airplane by the wrong name, I chose to use Metro II in this article as that is the most common overall name for the SA226 series that I could find.

The Swearingen SA226-T(B), commonly known as the Metro II, is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft designed for regional and commuter airline operations. It was developed in the late 1960s and became popular throughout the 1970s and 1980s for its efficient performance and capacity to accommodate a good number of passengers. With a comfortable cabin typically configured to hold up to 19 passengers, the Metro II is known for its short takeoff and landing capabilities, making it an ideal choice for flying to smaller airports with shorter runways. Its turboprop engines provide reliability and fuel efficiency, important factors for regional airlines aiming to minimize operational costs.

The Swearingen SA226-T(B) was designed and built by Swearingen Aircraft, an American aerospace company. Founded by Richard Swearingen in the late 1950s, the company focused on creating regional aircraft that catered to the needs of smaller airlines and commuter operations. The Metro series, including the SA226-T(B), was developed to provide efficient performance and versatility for regional flight markets. The aircraft's design emphasizes reliability and operational efficiency, making it a popular choice during its production years, which spanned from the early 1970s to the late 1980s.

Swearingen Aircraft Company was founded in 1959 by Richard Swearingen in San Antonio, Texas. Initially, the company aimed to produce small aircraft for the general aviation market, but it soon shifted its focus to the design and manufacture of regional transport aircraft. The company gained prominence in the 1960s with the introduction of the Swearingen Merlin, a light twin aircraft, which was well-received in the market. The success of this model led to the development of the SA226 series, notably the Metro II, which became a staple for regional airlines and air taxi services. Despite achieving significant success, the company faced financial challenges in the late 1980s, which led to its eventual acquisition by Fairchild Industries in 1982. While operations continued under the Fairchild name for a time, the legacy of Swearingen Aircraft lives on through its contribution to regional aviation and the enduring popularity of its aircraft designs.

The SA226-T(B) variant features enhanced performance and improved avionics over its predecessors, offering a modernized cockpit while retaining the Metro’s signature spacious cabin design. Additionally, it has been equipped with better noise insulation to enhance the passenger experience. Many Metro IIs have been adapted for various uses, including cargo transport and air ambulance services, owing to their versatility. Although newer aircraft models have largely replaced the Metro II in commercial service, its durable construction and performance capabilities continue to make it a reliable choice in niche markets and special operations.

We purchased this aircraft after it was retired from a fleet in Colorado. The engines for this aircraft have been sold.

We expect to recover parts and components from this aircraft, such as...

Piper PA-31T Cheyenne

The Piper PA-31T, also known as the Piper Cheyenne, is a twin-engine turboprop aircraft designed for a combination of passenger and cargo transport. Introduced in the mid-1970s, the PA-31T is part of the Piper PA-31 series, which is renowned for its versatility, reliability, and efficiency. The aircraft features a sleek, low-wing design and is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A engines, providing significant performance and climb capabilities. With a typical seating configuration for six to eight passengers, the Cheyenne is commonly used in both commercial and private aviation, offering a comfortable ride and relatively low operating costs compared to larger jets.

The PA-31T also boasts a range of advanced avionics and systems that enhance its operational efficiency and safety. Equipped with features like de-icing systems and a robust fuel capacity, the aircraft can perform well in various weather conditions and is suitable for regional flights. Its cabin space can be customized to accommodate different needs, making it popular among air charter services and private owners alike. With a strong reputation for durability and ease of maintenance, the Piper PA-31T continues to serve as a practical choice for those seeking a reliable turboprop aircraft.

This Cheyenne comes to from a fleet of aircraft that we purchased and are continuing to process through disassembly.
