An Aerostar Backstory

Ted Smith’s first Aerostar model was flown in 1967. It was built to transport 6 people and was powered by two Avco Lycoming piston engines, both were wing mounted.

A failed acquisition by the American Cement Company in 1968 led to the eventual successful acquisition by Butler Aviation International in 1969, who acquired Mooney Aircraft that same year.

Butler Aviation had plans to move production of the Aerostar from California to Texas, where Mooney was also manufactured.

In 1971 Smith attempted to purchase back his rights to the Aerostar design, but his attempt failed. He tried again in 1972 and was successful.

After reacquiring his original design, Smith released the pressurized Aerostar 601P, a design highlighted by a pressurized Cabin system. Models like the Aerostar 700 Superstar followed.

Ted Smith passed away in 1976, and in that same year, the company became Ted Smith Aircraft.

In 1978, the Ted Smith Aircraft Company was acquired by Piper Aircraft, and the Aerostar’s final production occurred in 1984.

Today’s Aerostar

Two individuals involved in the Ted Smith Aircraft operation now operate the Aerostar Aircraft Corporation in Hayden, Idaho.

Jim Christy and Steve Speer purchased the certificate and manufacturing documentation for the Aerostar in 1991.

Today, the corporation still provides maintenance services for Aerostar models, and continues the research and development, including an 8-seat variant.
