🛩 A Brief History of the Cessna Citation 560 Series

Origins and Design Evolution

The Cessna Citation 560, originally known as the Citation V, is a twin-engine light business jet developed from the Citation S/II. It made its first flight in August 1987 and received certification on December 9, 1988, with deliveries beginning in April 1989. It marked a significant step up in performance and space from its predecessors, featuring:

  • A 1.5-foot fuselage stretch over the Citation S/II.
  • A recontoured cabin interior offering 17.3 feet of cabin length and seven windows per side.
  • A maximum seating capacity of 11, including a belted lavatory seat.
  • JT15D-5A turbofans from Pratt & Whitney Canada, providing 2,900 lbf of thrust each.

The Citation V introduced electronic flight instrumentation (EFIS) - standard for the first time in a Citation, albeit only on the captain’s side.

Performance Enhancements

The airframe retained the supercritical airfoil and swept wing roots of the S/II but improved aerodynamic efficiency and maintenance ease. Pneumatic deicing boots replaced the older fluid system, and the horizontal stabilizer span was extended to account for greater engine thrust. The V cruised at 425 knots and reached a service ceiling of 45,000 ft, though its range was slightly lower than its predecessor due to increased fuel consumption.

Production and Variants

Between 1989 and 2011, 774 aircraft were produced:

  • Citation V: 262 units
  • Ultra: 279 units
  • Encore: 168 units
  • Encore+: 65 units

Military variants include the UC-35A/B/C/D and OT-47B Tracker, with specialized roles in executive transport and drug interdiction.

Technical and Performance Upgrades

The Citation Ultra, announced in September 1993 and certified in June 1994, was a significant evolution of the Citation V. It introduced:

  • New JT15D-5D engines with 3,045 lbf of thrust—featuring redesigned compressors and turbines, and machined fan disks.
  • These engine upgrades allowed the Ultra to become the first straight-wing Citation to exceed critical Mach in level flight.
  • A full Honeywell Primus 1000 glass cockpit, replacing the partial EFIS system with modernized pilot avionics.

Performance remained impressive with a cruise speed around 420–430 knots, a service ceiling of FL450, and a range of 1,960 nautical miles.

Reception and Legacy

  • The Ultra was named Flying Magazine’s "Best Business Jet" of 1994.
  • It remained in production until 1999, with a total of 279 aircraft delivered.
  • It is commonly used by the U.S. Army (UC-35A) and Marine Corps (UC-35C) for high-priority transport missions.
