Five Aircraft Enter BAS Disassembly: Piper Comanche, Colt, Cardinal RG, P210N Silver Eagle and Cessna 421

Five very different aircraft are now moving through the BAS piston hangar: a Piper PA-24-250 Comanche, Piper PA-22-108 Colt, Cessna 177RG Cardinal RG, Cessna P210N Silver Eagle conversion and Cessna 421. The lineup stretches from a deliberately simple two-seat trainer to a pressurized cabin-class twin, with retractable gear, modernized panels, turbine power and several decades of aircraft design in between. The documented component packages include Garmin, Aspen, Avidyne, Sandel, S-Tec, King and Collins equipment, Rolls-Royce 250 and Continental GTSIO-520 components, landing gear systems, propeller hardware, interiors and aircraft-specific pieces. As disassembly progresses, confirmed inventory will be cataloged and moved back into circulation for the owners and shops supporting these fleets.

The Piston Hangar Has a Turbine in It

We checked the sign. It is still the right building.
 
That Cessna P210N Silver Eagle conversion is sharing floor space with a Piper PA-22-108 Colt, a Cessna 177RG Cardinal RG, a Piper PA-24-250 Comanche and a Cessna 421. The lineup begins with a deliberately simple two-seat trainer and finishes with a pressurized cabin-class twin. Between them sit retractable gear, six-cylinder power, turbine power, modernized panels and several decades of general aviation engineering.
 
This is not five versions of the same story. It is nearly the whole capability ladder under one roof.
 
The reasons these airplanes stopped flying are different, and so are the parts packages. One came in after an off-airport landing. Another after complications during approach. The Cardinal had a gear-up landing. The Silver Eagle experienced a power loss during takeoff. The 421 reached the point where the maintenance math no longer supported continued operation as a complete aircraft.
 
At BAS, those paths converge. Each aircraft enters a controlled disassembly process focused on identifying, documenting and listing the components that can still support the remaining fleet.

Piper PA-22-108 Colt

Simple on Purpose, Useful by Design
 
The PA-22-108 Colt was Piper’s lower-cost, two-seat training version of the Tri-Pacer. Piper kept the basic short-wing platform but simplified the assignment, leaving out the four-seat aircraft’s flaps, second wing tank, rear side windows and rear door. The result was an uncomplicated trainer that shared much of its structure and hardware with the broader PA-22 family.
 
This Colt came to BAS after complications during approach brought its flying career to a close. The public story does not need to go further than that. What matters next is a careful review of the aircraft and a confirmed recovery list for owners and shops supporting the PA-22 fleet.

Cessna 177RG Cardinal RG

The Cardinal That Cleaned Up the Airframe
 
The Cardinal began as Cessna’s attempt to build a more modern successor to the 172. Its pilot-forward cabin, strutless cantilever wing and cleaner airframe gave the 177 a shape and personality that stood apart from the rest of the Cessna single-engine lineup. The 177RG was the final version of the Cardinal family, adding retractable landing gear and additional power to the already clean design.
 
This Cardinal RG entered the BAS hangar after a gear-up landing. Its Lycoming IO-360-A1B6D is documented with propeller-strike history, while the remaining panel package includes a useful mix of Garmin, Stratus, Apollo and JPI equipment.
 
The Cardinal RG fleet is not enormous, which makes aircraft-specific gear, cabin, panel and airframe components worth watching as this airplane moves through disassembly.

Piper PA-24-250 Comanche

Piper’s All-Metal Answer to Going Somewhere
 
The PA-24 Comanche was Piper’s all-metal, low-wing, retractable-gear traveling single. The higher-powered PA-24-250 joined the family in 1958 with a 250-horsepower Lycoming O-540, giving owners a serious cross-country step up from the original Comanche 180. It became the most numerous of the single-engine Comanche variants.
 
This PA-24-250 came to BAS after fuel exhaustion led to an off-airport wheels-up landing on a gravel road. The Lycoming O-540-A1C5 and propeller-strike history are documented in the aircraft notes, as is a mix of modernized and legacy panel equipment.
 
The Comanche has always occupied its own corner of the Piper world. That makes model-specific landing gear hardware, wing components, cabin pieces and panel equipment particularly relevant to owners and shops keeping the remaining PA-24 fleet moving.

Cessna P210N Silver Eagle Conversion

A Pressurized Centurion With a Different Soundtrack
 
The Cessna 210 grew into a six-seat, high-performance retractable single, while the P210N added cabin pressurization to the platform. The Silver Eagle conversion took that idea another step by replacing piston power with a Rolls-Royce Model 250 turbine installation. It is still recognizably a Centurion, but the component package tells a very different story.
 
This Silver Eagle came to BAS after a loss of power during takeoff. The reason for that loss of power was never determined. The aircraft returned to the remaining runway, then continued beyond it before coming to rest.
 
That is enough detail for the public story. The component profile is the headline now: Rolls-Royce 250 turbine hardware, Garmin WAAS navigators, Sandel and Garmin displays, S-Tec autopilot components, auxiliary fuel-system hardware, landing gear hydraulic components and a useful cabin package.

Cessna 421

When the Airplane Still Flew but the Math Stopped Working
 
The Cessna 421 family was developed as a pressurized version of the earlier Cessna 411. It combined cabin-class travel, retractable landing gear and twin geared Continental engines in a six or seven-seat light transport platform. This was not a trainer that gradually acquired more equipment. The 421 was designed from the beginning to move people in pressurized comfort. After sitting since 2021, this Cessna 421 flew to BAS. The airplane could still make the trip, but its maintenance list had reached the point where continued operation no longer made economic sense. That distinction matters. This was not an aircraft that simply stopped functioning. It was an aircraft whose systems, engines, avionics and cabin components retained practical recovery value even after the complete-aircraft calculation stopped working.
