The Hawker 800A now rolling into the BAS 621 disassembly hangar carries the pedigree of one of the most respected names in business aviation. Despite its sleek lines and enduring legacy, this jet has reached the end of its flying career...but not the end of its usefulness. Our mechanics will be recovering a long list of high-demand parts, from avionics and control surfaces to interior components and engines.

The 800A was the first production member of the series and set the template for all subsequent models. Its defining features included redesigned cockpit glass, upgraded avionics, and wingtip modifications that improved aerodynamic efficiency. In 1994, Raytheon acquired BAe Corporate Jets and continued the 800 program under its Beechcraft line, eventually handing it over to Hawker Beechcraft in 2007. Production of the family ran until 2013, with more than 650 airframes built across all variants.

Hawker 800A

Origins & Development

The Hawker 800 traces its lineage to the British Aerospace 125, a design that first took flight in 1961. By the early 1980s, BAE sought to modernize the proven platform, sanctioning an upgraded model with improved aerodynamics, more powerful Garrett/Honeywell TFE731 turbofan engines, and a fully modernized cockpit. The result was the 800 series, which first flew in June 1983 and quickly established itself as one of the premier mid-size business jets of its era.

Production Numbers

The Hawker 800 series saw solid production over three decades. The Hawker 800 family was produced from 1983 to 2013, with a total of about 650 aircraft built across all versions. Variants included the 800A, 800XP, 800XPi, 850XP, 900XP, and the shorter-range 750. The most successful variant was the Hawker 800XP, with around 475 sold between 1995 and 2005.

  • Hawker 800 / 800A / 800SP: ~150 built (first-generation models, introduced 1983)
  • Hawker 800XP: 475 built (most popular variant, produced 1995–2005)
  • Hawker 800XPi: small number, exact production unknown (improved avionics)
  • Hawker 850XP: moderate production in the 2000s (added winglets, +100 nm range)
  • Hawker 900XP: production numbers not published, built until 2012 (upgraded Honeywell engines, longer range)
  • Hawker 750: 48 built (shorter-range model, added baggage pannier)

The Hawker 800XP dominated the series, accounting for nearly 500 of the 650+ aircraft built, cementing its reputation as one of the most successful midsize business jets of its time.

Hawker 800A

Design & Performance

The Hawker 800A is powered by two AlliedSignal (Honeywell) TFE731-5R-1H engines, each producing 4,200 pounds of thrust. While slightly less powerful than later XP variants, they provide ample performance for a jet of its class. At cruise altitude, the 800A achieves a high-speed cruise of 442 knots at 37,000 feet, with a typical long-range cruise around 401 knots. Its NBAA IFR range is approximately 2,539 nautical miles, enough for nonstop trips such as New York to Los Angeles or London to Moscow.

Runway performance is a hallmark of the type: at sea level, the 800A requires about 5,600 feet for takeoff. At a high-elevation airport (5,000 ft, 77°F), the requirement grows to nearly 9,800 feet. Its maximum certified altitude is 41,000 feet. Fuel burn averages around 261 gallons per hour across all flight phases, making it competitive with other midsize jets of its generation.

Cabin & Avionics

The 800A’s cabin, pressurized to a differential of 8.6 psi, can maintain a sea-level cabin altitude up to 22,000 feet. Typical seating arrangements include eight passengers, arranged in a four-seat club, a three-seat divan, and one forward-facing chair. Seats swivel 360° and are fully adjustable, giving the aircraft a reputation for comfort on medium to long-range flights.

The cockpit was among the first in its class to go fully digital. The Honeywell SPZ-8000 suite includes dual autopilot, GPS, Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS), Traffic Collision Avoidance (TCAS), and five integrated display screens. This advanced avionics package made the 800A a pilot favorite for its clarity and reduced workload.

Operation & Legacy

While the Hawker 800 family saw widespread use with corporations, charter operators, and fractional ownership programs, it also attracted military customers. Japan, South Korea, Nigeria, Pakistan, and others operated specialized versions for surveillance, search and rescue, and reconnaissance.

The Hawker 800A in particular cemented its place as one of the most balanced midsize business jets ever built. Its combination of range, cabin comfort, proven reliability, and cost-effective operations helped it compete directly with the Citation VII, Falcon 20, and Learjet 60.
