New Arrival in the BAS Turbine Hangar: Cessna Citation II (550)

The Cessna Citation 550, better known as the Citation II, represents a major step forward in the evolution of Cessna’s light jet lineup. Introduced as a stretched and more capable successor to the original Citation I, the Model 550 brought increased cabin space, improved performance, and greater range to operators around the world. With more than a thousand Citation II variants delivered across its production run, this aircraft remains one of the most recognizable and widely supported light business jets in service today.

Announced in 1976 and first flown in early 1977, the Citation 550 was designed to address one of the main criticisms of its predecessor: cruise speed. By lengthening the fuselage, increasing wingspan, and installing more powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-4 engines, Cessna created an aircraft capable of cruising near 385 knots while retaining the forgiving handling and short-field performance the Citation family is known for. These design choices helped solidify the Citation II’s reputation as a dependable and versatile corporate jet.

Inside, the Citation 550 offered meaningful upgrades over earlier models. The stretched cabin increased seating capacity to accommodate up to eight passengers, along with two pilots, while also improving overall comfort and headroom. Systems throughout the aircraft were refined to support higher weights, increased fuel capacity, and longer missions, making the Citation II a popular choice for business aviation, charter operators, and special-mission roles alike.

We will recover parts and components from EVERY system on this airplane...

Over time, the platform continued to evolve into multiple variants, including the single-pilot II/SP and the improved Citation S/II. These later versions incorporated aerodynamic refinements, system updates, and additional fuel capacity to push performance even further. Military and government adaptations, such as the U.S. Navy’s T-47A radar trainer, highlight just how adaptable the Citation 550 airframe proved to be across a wide range of missions.

Today, many Citation IIs are reaching a stage in their lifecycle where parting out the aircraft makes practical sense. High fleet numbers and decades of service have created strong, ongoing demand for serviceable components. From engines and avionics to flight controls, landing gear, and interior equipment, the Citation 550 continues to support operators who rely on proven parts availability to keep their aircraft flying.

Here in our hangar, this Citation 550 is being carefully disassembled with that exact goal in mind. Each component is methodically removed, cleaned, documented, photographed, and preserved to ensure traceability and quality for future use. The teardown process allows us to recover valuable systems while maintaining the integrity of individual parts destined to support other aircraft in the field.

Aircraft like the Citation 550 play a critical role in sustaining the broader business aviation ecosystem. By responsibly disassembling and redistributing parts, we help extend the operational life of active Citations while reducing downtime and costs for operators. It’s a process that combines technical expertise with a deep understanding of the aircraft’s design and long-term support needs.

As disassembly continues, this Citation 550 will contribute to keeping similar aircraft flying for years to come. From its early days as a faster, roomier evolution of the Citation I to its modern role as a valuable source of components, the Model 550 remains an important chapter in business aviation history, and an aircraft that still delivers value well beyond its final flight.
